Teacher Taster Weeks

(School Experience Programme)
This programme is designed to let individuals experience some of the everyday tasks of modern teaching,
to observe teachers and students and how they work together
  • People considering a change of career
  • People wondering if secondary school teaching is for them
  • People wishing to gain a place on a PGCE course

* Please note that you should be intending to apply for initial teacher training during this academic year (to start during the next academic year)

  • Applicants must have maths and English GCSE at Grade C or above (or equivalent)
  • Applicants must have, or be predicted to achieve, a minimum 2:2 in a degree which is relevant to the subject they wish to teach (or sufficient A Level qualifications to enable them to progress their teaching training application with some subject knowledge enhancement support if appropriate).
  • Applicants must have had less than 10 days school experience in an English state school in the past 12 months
  • take a tour of the school
  • find out more about the running of the school
  • meet with a recently qualified teacher or a current teacher trainee whose experiences they can share
  • talk with a representative of the faculty in their chosen subject specialism
  • observe lessons within their chosen specialism
  • observe a Tutor group and join an assembly
5 consecutive full days; please note that it is important that you are able to attend for all 5 days of the placement. (Please note that, due to an increasingly high demand for such placements, Rushey Mead Academy will not accept delegates on any dates other than those published here).
The School Experience Programme is currently fully funded. Participants will only be required to pay for a DBS check (£50) if required and a subscription to the update service (£13).

During the 2018-19 academic year, we will be holding Teacher Taster Weeks on the following dates:

•Week commencing Monday 19th November 2018
•Week commencing Monday 28th January 2019
•Week commencing Monday 1st April 2019
•Week commencing Monday 17th June 2019


All applications must initially be made through the Department for Education’s School Experience Programme website. Please follow this link  to find instructions on how to register for the School Experience Programme. Once you have registered, please search for events at Rushey Mead Academy; the website will advise that you are only be registering for one day but as soon as the Department for Education informs us that you have registered, we will contact you to confirm a full week’s experience programme.
